After Facebook Zero, After Google Zero

Facebook traffic went to zero. Google is next. AI doesn't even click through. The entire model of "we publish, someone else sends us readers" is ending as a category — and the publishers who built direct trust will be the ones that survive.

Facebook used to send publishers 30 percent of their traffic. Then 10. Then 2. Then zero — unless you pay. Google is following the same curve, and the math is worse: AI doesn't click through at all.

The Last Referral Source Just Left

Brian Alvey, CTO of WordPress VIP, described the shift in practice on The AI Report. He loads fifteen YouTube videos and hundreds of articles into NotebookLM. Reads none of them. Clicks no ads. Subscribes to nothing. The content gets consumed. The publisher gets nothing back.

Search and social at least sent visitors in exchange for scraping your content. AI breaks even that thin deal. The scraping is bigger than ever. The return traffic is zero.

There Is No Next Pipe

Most local news operations were built on referral traffic — clicks from search results, social shares, aggregation feeds. Not readers who typed in the URL. When those clicks vanish, the outlets built around them vanish too. Not because readers stopped caring, but because the distribution pipe got shut off by someone who never owed you anything.

The instinct will be to chase the next platform, optimize for the next algorithm. That instinct is wrong. AI doesn't send traffic. It consumes content and delivers answers. "We publish, someone else sends us readers" is not migrating to a new platform. It is ending as a category.

What Survives

Alvey's first-principles framing: a media business amasses attention and sells it. That equation hasn't changed. What changed is that attention can no longer be amassed through someone else's feed.

The kind of reporting that builds a reader who comes back because this is where they learn what happened at the council meeting. Not because a search result pointed them here.

A large publisher carries legacy traffic models and revenue tied to page views from platforms it doesn't control. Unwinding that takes years. We never had millions of Google clicks to lose. The question was always how to earn attention one neighborhood at a time — and that turned out to be the right question.

When AI agents start assembling morning briefings, they'll pull from the sources people named and trusted. The publications that earned that trust will be cited. The ones that existed only as search results will be invisible.

The referral era trained publishers to think about reach. What replaces it rewards the ones who built trust.
